The first thing I thought on seeing the crash of the young luge athlete was that the track design at that point was ludicrously unsafe. None of the discussion of this tragedy should focus on the athlete, experienced or not. Anyone who has watched more than one winter Olympics has seen luge racers crash and leave the course. I don't care if a sack of flour is sent down the track, if you leave the track for any reason, you shouldn't run directly into steel posts! Would we do this in modern highway design? Putting the posts on the outside of one of the fastest turns on the course is criminal at each level of approval of this design. The place for blame for this death looks obvious from here and dicussing the athlete's lack of experience is pathetic diversionary tactic.
